NAIDOC Week 2023
Message from the CEO:
Due to the passing of a Ngarluma Elder we have decided to postpone the City of Karratha’s NAIDOC events this week.Â
We will work with the First Nations community, event organisers and artists to investigate rescheduling NAIDOC activities to a more appropriate time.
We send our thoughts and sympathies to the families and Ngarluma community at this difficult time.
National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.Â
The 2023 NAIDOC Week theme is “For our Elders”. Across every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones. Officers are currently engaging with NAC and other key stakeholders to see how we can collaborate to deliver successful and inclusive NAIDOC Week Celebrations.Â
