Award winning Tasmanian artist named Cossack Artist In Residence

Tasmania based artist Katie Barron has been selected as the Cossack Art Awards 2024 Artist in Residence.

Sponsored by Principal Partner Rio Tinto, the Artist in Residence programs returns to the historic town of Cossack, which Katie will call home during her four-week residency.

Katie works primarily in oils and her practice consists of creating oil paintings to explore concepts of play and its relation to appreciation and joy.

She was selected for the 2023 RISE exhibition at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery celebrating ten of Tasmania’s most significant and collectible emerging artists.

Katie has been selected as a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the York Botanic Art Prize, Western Australia, as well as winning first prize in the 2023 The Henry Jones Art Prize, Hobart.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the City is delighted to present Katie Barron as this years’ Cossack Arts Awards Artist in Residence.

“The Cossack Arts Awards are one of the most significant events in the Western Australian arts & culture calendar and provide a unique platform for local artists to showcase their talents," Cr Scott said.

“Katie is one of Tasmania’s top emerging artists, and I look forward to seeing the work that comes out of the residency.”

Artist in residence Katie Barron said she was excited to be able to spend time in such a unique place and fully immerse herself in art making.

“The environment of Cossack is so different to Tasmania, I'm looking forward to experiencing it first hand and seeing how that might inform my work," Ms Barron said.

"Being selected for this program is incredibly meaningful for me because it allows me the opportunity to not only travel and meet new people in new places but also provides the financial resources to dedicate myself to my arts practice.

“The opportunity to spend four weeks away from my regular life and routine will allow me to focus on my art in a way that I rarely get to do."
